“Creating one strategy for Total Facilities Management (TFM)” – this was the objective of a commodity strategy workshop in January. A global industrial organization requested this workshop to reach an internal agreement on a way forward. Representatives from Real Estate, all Business Units and Global Procurement worked together to agree on future direction, including to prefer global players in TFM.

Purspective facilitated the workshop. Before getting down to the ‘real’ work, the various participants from Real Estate, the Business Units and Global Procurement took part in an e-learning module on Commodity Strategy Development (CSD) theory. The participants then pooled their personal and professional skills to arrive at a shared vision for the future, along with a list of specific actions to further improve the CSD process.

In particular, they agreed to give preference to global players in TFM, but to use regional suppliers in certain situations – for instance, to stimulate competition. They also agreed to align contract end dates as far as possible to 31 December 2013. This would enable the consolidation of contracts in 5 years time.

The team also recommended installing program management, with a particular focus on stakeholder communication.

In concrete terms, some initial changes are underway. On 15 February, the Company signed a first umbrella contract for the Benelux region with global facility management provider.

The commodity manager stated: “The CSD workshop has been to be very successful in bringing together various stakeholder group interests. It provided an excellent vehicle to discuss and review each others' objectives and find a common way forward. The Purspective trainer (Anil Joshi) has been very instrumental in this process: Knowing when to hold back and when to press on. His excellent facilitation skills were key in achieving our result.”
